Avodart® (Dustasteride) is the new brand name medication from GlaxoSmithKline® for reducing DHT. It is also available in two generic forms called Dutas (pictured above) and Veltride.

Just as Propecia® prevents one of two enzymes from being converted into DHT and blocks 2/3 of the DHT production. The new medication Avodart® (Dustasteride) blocks both enzymes in the body that convert into DHT and reduces overall DHT production by over 93%.

Avodart® and Dutas comes in a 0.5mg soft gel (gellatin) capsule that is taken by mouth once per day. Veltride is in the regular tablet form and is also 0.5mg not being a gel capsule the comparative cost of this product is slightly lower.

Propecia was originally approved under the name Proscar® for BPH and was only released for hair loss years later. Avodart has been approved for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostates) and is currently under study for approval for hair loss.

Avodart® at this 0.5mg dosage reduced DHT by 93.1-93.6% after 12-months on the medication. Scalp DHT was decreased 38% for Propecia®/Finasteride compared to 54% for 0.5mg Dutasteride.

Since Avodart® is currently being studied for hair loss, there are no exact figures on the percent of responders or results other than some of the sample photos released by the company from the studies. Results are expected to surpass Propecia's®.

Clinical trials for dutasteride as a hair loss drug were undertaken but called off in late 2002 for unknown reasons. Some medical professionals believe the study was dropped because the results were inconclusive, others believe the side effects of dutasteride were lingering in patients after ceasing use. Reports state that dutasteride (whose side effects include impotence, decreased libido, ejacultation disorders and gynecomastia, or enlargement of the breast gland) has a half-life of over 240 hours which means 2.5mg of dustasteride will still be in your system 240 hours after consuming a 5mg dose. After one month, 0.625mg will still be present in the body.

Finasteride’s side effects, experienced by 1.8 percent or roughly two in 100 patients, include erectile dysfunction and less often gynecomastia but always cease once dosage is discontinued. Propecia is metabolised in the liver and has a half-life of just a few hours, meaning it leaves the body very quickly. Further clinical trials for dutasteride are currently underway in the U.S. and investigators have reported successful outcomes when using a dose several times higher than in Avodart.

Up to date clinical trial results for Avodart have recently been released and completed by GlaxoSmithKline and can be seen Here
